Six Methods For Improving Your Essay Writing Skills

Information is a major part of human social interactions and there are various methods by which this information is transferred. One of the earliest, and quite possibly the most important, is information transfer in the form of text, a method developed hundreds of years ago that is still practiced today. Anyone can write an essay, but not everyone can write a good one and even people that can write well, still practice expanding their skills. Improving your literary skills is quite a valuable pursuit and should be done proudly. In the following points I will outline some basic steps to try when attempting to improve your essay writing skills:

  1. Read more
  2. Reading is a major part of every educational venture since most of human knowledge is passed on from generation to generation and built upon every time around. Visit a library, either in real or on the internet and find a variety of materials to read. This will greatly improve both your exposure to different writing styles, as well as many clever ways to construct and express an idea.

  3. Practice writing in different types of formats
  4. Each type of paper calls for different features and they vary greatly from field to field. For instance, scientific research pieces are often more focused on details and fact presentation than on being particular expressive or emotional. Becoming familiar with different writing styles will improve your overall proficiency as a writer.

  5. Have your peers review your original pieces
  6. Whenever you write an original piece, have your friends or family member read it and give you honest criticism. This can be a very effective, affordable and accessible way of directly identifying your weakness, allowing you to work on improving your skills.

  7. Honestly criticize the work of others
  8. Read the works of others like yourself and give honest, educated criticism. This will make it harder for you to ignore shortcomings of your own writing since it is usually much harder to correctly identify your own mistakes, but extremely easy to spot those of others.

  9. Analyze your pieces critically
  10. Read you own paper after you have completed it as if it were not your own and be particularly strict with in criticizing it. If you could master this technique, then every piece you produce will be of high quality.

  11. Select different styles and attempt to master them
  12. Expanding one’s skill-set will always be beneficial so don’t be afraid to expand your knowledge and experiences into fields that your are not directly associated with.
